About the service
Is Mirai Voca really free?
Yes. Mirai Voca is completely free to use. There are no premium tiers, no paywalls, no required account, and no in-app purchases. The site is funded by minimal, non-disruptive advertising so the creator can keep it free for everyone.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required. You can open Mirai Voca in any browser and start studying immediately. We do not collect names, emails, passwords, or payment information. Your language and theme preferences are saved locally in your browser only.
Can I use Mirai Voca on my phone?
Yes. Mirai Voca is fully responsive and works on any modern mobile browser. You can also add the site to your home screen for a near-app experience without installing anything from an app store.
Is my study progress saved?
Some preferences (language, theme, last selected level / Day) are saved in your browser's local storage and stay on your device. Cross-device study progress synchronization is on the roadmap. Until then, you can keep your progress consistent by using the same browser on the same device.
Study & content
Which JLPT level should I start with?
If you are completely new to Japanese, start with the 50-Sound Chart and Basic Vocabulary modules first. Once you can read kana fluently and recognize ~500 basic words, begin with JLPT N5. If you are unsure whether you should be at N5 or N4, take the N5 quiz first; if you score 80% or higher, move up to N4.
How is the vocabulary chosen?
Mirai Voca's vocabulary is curated from publicly available Japanese learning resources, official exam guidelines (for JLPT and JPT), and material organized by the maintainer. We focus on high-frequency words that actually appear on exams and in daily Japanese, rather than obscure vocabulary.
How does the Day system work?
Each learning module is split into chunks of about 30 words called Days. The idea is to study one Day per session, then come back the next day to review it before learning the next Day. This builds spaced repetition naturally and prevents burnout from trying to memorize hundreds of words at once.
What is the difference between JLPT and JPT?
JLPT is the international standard, with five pass/fail levels from N5 to N1. JPT is widely used in Korea and uses a continuous score from 0 to 990, with a heavier focus on business Japanese. See our JLPT vs JPT article for the full comparison.
Does Mirai Voca have audio for pronunciation?
Yes, the 50-Sound Chart for Hiragana and Katakana includes tap-to-hear pronunciation for every character. Audio pronunciation for the basic vocabulary, JLPT, and JPT modules is on the roadmap and will be added in future updates.
Languages & site features
What languages does Mirai Voca support?
Mirai Voca's interface supports 10 languages: English (default), Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Use the language switcher in the top-right of the header to change languages — your choice is saved locally.
Why are some pages still showing Korean text?
Mirai Voca supports 10 languages, with English as the default. The headers, footers, navigation, and most page text are translated into all 10 languages. Some study tool pages (flashcard and quiz screens) still contain Korean labels in the body — these are being progressively migrated to the multilingual system.
Ads, contact & affiliation
Why does Mirai Voca show ads?
Hosting and maintaining a free Japanese learning platform has real costs. A small number of non-disruptive ads helps cover those costs so the site can stay free for everyone. We deliberately keep ad density low and never place ads inside the actual study flow.
Can I contribute words or report mistakes?
Yes — feedback is genuinely welcome. If you spot a typo, wrong meaning, or missing word, send us a note via the Contact page or email [email protected]. Please include the page URL and the word in question so we can fix it quickly.
Who runs Mirai Voca?
Mirai Voca is built and maintained by an independent developer (Ahngunism) based on personal Japanese learning experience. It is not affiliated with any school, publisher, or testing organization. See the About page for more details.
Is Mirai Voca affiliated with the JLPT, JPT, or any official organization?
No. Mirai Voca is an independent learning resource. JLPT is administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services. JPT is administered by YBM in Korea. Mirai Voca uses publicly available exam guidelines to organize its vocabulary, but it is not endorsed by or affiliated with these organizations.
