JLPT vocabulary from N5 to N1

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognized Japanese qualification, with five levels from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Vocabulary makes up a significant part of every level — and the difference between passing and failing is often a few hundred words you didn't review.

This module organizes the core vocabulary for each JLPT level. N5 and N4 cover the most common nouns, verbs, and adjectives needed for daily life. N3 introduces more abstract words and verb compounds. N2 and N1 expand into formal, academic, and business vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions and rarer Kanji compounds.

Use Day-based study to keep the workload sustainable, and combine flashcards with quizzes to make sure each word is genuinely memorized — not just recognized. If you're unsure which level to start at, try the N5 quiz first; if you score above 80%, move up to N4.

The full N5 set contains about 800 words, and higher levels (N4, N3, N2, N1) progressively add more vocabulary, more abstract concepts, and more Kanji.
